How did this happen?

From 2012 the solar panel industry grew rapidly, however, many installers had little or no experience or knowledge of the products that they were selling, and often folded a few years later leaving a trail of complaints behind them. More recently, some of the remaining solar panel installers have become more subtle in the manner which they overstate the benefits, and are likely to include LED bulbs, voltage optimisers, and boiler controls as part of their package.

Mis-selling solar panel practices

We are aware many consumers never received the appropriate paperwork with which to register their systems for FITs payments, and we act for other customers where the paperwork was received too late to register for the stated tariffs. Sales representatives are paid by results; in the case of solar sales many were only paid when they sold a system. This put them under tremendous pressure to close deals, sometimes at the expense of failing to advise homeowners appropriately.

Many companies claimed financial benefits that were exaggerated, and often it was impossible to verify the projected benefits that were claimed. For example, many people were shown presentations on the sales person’s laptop, which often ensured they were left with no or little information to refer to after the sale had been agreed. Some consumers were also given contracts, where key information was missing, or had been miscalculated to overstate the benefits.
